Following our visit to Orana Park we used free writing to share our learning. Students added their ideas, learning, words or drawings (some from their Writer's Notebooks) to a Y-Chart in terms of what their chosen animal looks like and sounds like. They then wrote for 15 minutes in a format of their choice, the free in "free writing", before checking and improving. To conclude they shared their writing with a buddy to get feedback.

Prowling Sumatran Tiger
Staring for any chance of escape,
Its stripy body moving stealthily through the landscape,
Scanning the path for a quick bite,
The caged creature roars its ferocious anger,
Missing its birthplace Indonesia, and the wild,
This creature growls at anyone who passes by,
It frustrates him that he got caught,
This creature is the Sumatran Tiger,
It maybe the smallest of the tiger species,
But to me this tiger is the king of the jungle.

Can You Guess?
Can you guess what my animal is?
She has a tall, stretched neck, also a blue tongue and a very coarse coat.
She feels lonely, but lucky that she doesn't get picked on.
She can feel the sun and chill on her back.
She is slow but can cover ground quickly with her large endless strides.

"Ohh ahh, ohh, ahh", I hear as I see the gibbons swinging on the rope. One has a puffy neck and a baby clutching on for safety. But then, without warning a bigger gibbon pushes one off but it grabs on and just in time.
When we're all quiet our leader tells us that they're singing when they shout. Right at that moment the gibbons go ballistic!!

Siamang Gibbons look like huge, black, fluffy teddy bears. They are cute, playful and amazing. Their feet and arms are strong and flexible as they have to be to hang on the ropes. Their neck gets puffy when they do their call which is like them speaking in their own language. Its sound or tone is like a person screaming and yelling.
When the babies are young they hang on their mother's tummy and after about a year their father takes over.
Their threats are mainly habitat loss and people kidnapping them.

The Sumatran Tiger
Did you know that the Sumatran Tiger is the world's smallest tiger and that they are very territorial animals which means they don't like animals or humans in their territory.
Sadly, the Sumatran Tigers are critically endangered due to habitat loss and humans killing the tigers for their own personal gain. Due to all of this disruption we only have 200-500 Sumatran Tigers left in the world.
Luckily, we have wildlife parks like Orana Park to help our big orange and black tigers continue their happy and mischievous lives.

The Sumatran Tiger
The Sumatran Tiger is the prettiest tiger in the world and it is critically endangered, but what is the Sumatran Tiger and why is it endangered?
The Sumatran Tiger is a miniature striped wildcat found on the mini island Sumatra, in Indonesia. They are very easy to see because of their brightly coloured frizzy fur. They are a blazing coral (orange) as the base colour and charcoal stripes on top.
There are only 250 - 500 Sumatran Tigers left in the world, so that means they are critically endangered. The reasons why they they are endangered are: over exploitation - people are poaching them for some body parts and a Palm Oil industry wrecking the rainforest.

The Gibbons are a soft, silky and fluffy animal. They are black with big feet and they have such long arms so they can swing from branch to branch. They have thumbs for good grip and their feet are like hands to cling onto objects well. They are very cute and have a big mouth containing sharp teeth.
They make a warning song to scare off the other animals that go into their territory. It will usually sound like ad human screaming, a dog woofing or barking and a very angry bird screeching at other birds. They are very loud and can be scary at times.
They feel soft and silky, they use their long arms to cling onto you. They are very cuddly, also loving and caring.
