We have 3 learning goals during our Inquiry:
- Define the significant events in Christchurch’s history 1850 to 2014.
- Compare and contrast the use of space and resources in Christchurch over time.
- Create your vision for a chosen space for Christchurch for future generations.
Our visit to the city helped us with learning around all of these goals.
What are your thoughts about the pros and cons of rebuilding the cathedral in the middle of Christchurch? Mr Corlett Rm6 Waikanae School
ReplyDeleteCons
DeleteIt will cost quite a lot to do this. If it is a stone building it will need to be able to survive any future earthquakes. It would take a long time to happen. It would need a new foundation to make it stable and this would be costly. Would a modern style building match the style of buildings in the Square.
Pros
Some of the existing cathedral still stands so it would sense to rebuild this. A new cathedral will be built more strongly. It is our main icon so it should be rebuilt. The new cathedral could include some of the parts of the old cathedral. They could use new materials to make it look the same and use something to stabilise the older parts. A new design would match the designs in our new city.

Cons- Rebuilding and repairing the original would cost between $104 million and $221 million and take 6-22 years to do so.
DeleteThe traditional building would cost between 85 million and 181 million and take 5-22 years to do so.
the modern choice would take only 4-9 years and cost between 56 million and 74 million. But it probably looks the worst
