We have been put into mixed groups. We have been given a design brief and certain materials with which to build the design to suit the need. We were given a certain time to create our design and then we had time to test how good our design was.
Challenge 1 - Curvi fly. We could use paper, blutak and sellotape to create a paper plane that would fly the furthest distance. this worked well but we didn't necessarily manage to get it to curve when it flew.
Challenge 2 - Message Carrier. You are in a building on one side of a narrow street and must get a map and some written instructions to your friends in another building across the street so they can safely escape from it before being discovered and know where to meet you. It is unsafe to venture out and cross the street, and you have to transfer the piece of paper without being heard or seen, or losing the only copy. You notice that there is an old telephone wire connecting the buildings, with the wire attached to each building just beside a window. You find some materials in an office desk. You wave to your friends and prepare to send the message. Speed and safe delivery are important, so they have to be able to quickly detach the map and unfold it in one piece — and there are no spare copies of the map.
Task
You have 20-25 minutes to construct a message carrier which will take a piece of A5 sized paper with a map and instructions safely across the narrow street to the other building 7m away. For younger students shorten the line to 3-4m.
You will have
• One rubber balloon
• 1.5m of 15mm wide sticky tape• two paper clips.
